Although relatively costly, dental implants are fast becoming the most popular method of replacing missing teeth. A dental implant is an “artificial root”, a cylindrical, precisely engineered screw which is made from high grade (medical grade) titanium.
Titanium has miraculous properties that allow bone forming cells to fuse with it allowing the bone of our jaws to “integrate” with precisely placed dental implants. Once the implant has been placed and typically, after a period of 2 to 4 months to allow for this “integration”, a porcelain tooth or crown can be attached to the implant to complete the process of replacing a missing tooth. The obvious advantage of this process is achieving a “fixed” solution without the need of using other natural teeth. This ensures the replaced “tooth” remains unattached to the adjacent teeth and will be as close in appearance and function to the natural tooth it has replaced.
Dental implants carry very high success rates, in excess of 95%! Strategically placed implants can be used to support porcelain bridges of up to 14 teeth, with varying configurations of tooth and attachment types.
